I need that Soft bread
मैडम मुझे सॉफ्ट वाली ब्रेड नहीं दे रही!!
Modern days CSDs are more like Malls. You go there, help yourself in picking the items displayed on various counters , put them in a trolley or basket, get them billed and move out. In near future , CSD is all set to be more modern and user friendly by providing online shopping facility and home delivery like Amazons and Flipkarts.
But CSDs were not so user friendly 25-30 teras back. Then, available items were displayed inside a closed transparent glass counter with csd price and item code written on it. You have to note down the item code of a particular item , you wish to purchase with quantity in a sheet of paper and hand it over to billing clerk . He/She will make the bill and some other staff of CSD will collect the items in a basket and hand it over to you. This was the procedure followed.
In 1996, We were under going training at MTI, Tambaram. On a Sunday, one of my entry mate AC(U/T) Kumar visited canteen for shopping. He noted down the codes of items with their quantity in sheet of plain paper and handed over the same to the lady clerk sitting on the billing counter. While preparing the bill, she raised objection over a particular item and asked Kumar , "Why you want item no. Xxxx?? You are Living In , I guess ."
"Madam , we get bread on Sundays only, so I want to purchase bread loafs so that I can have it whenever I wish to." Kumar argued.
"You are mistaken man . That is not bread. You can not purchase it. It,s not for you. " Lady Clerk tried to clear the confusion.
"But Madam, I have seen many Airmen purchasing it. Why are you discriminating?" Kumar was not satisfied with her clarification.
"Try to understand Mr. Kumar. That item is for Living -out personnel only, not for you. Please do not waste my time. " And she refused to entertain Kumar further.
But AC(U/T) Kumar was not convinced at all. Why this discrimination against him ? Are breads meant for Living out personal only? Why Living in people are not allowed to purchase?? He had so many unanswered questions in his mind.
So, he went straightway to Canteen Manager and complained, " Sir, Madam is not giving me the bread."
"Bread? But there is no bread in canteen for sale." Manager replied.
"It is there, Sir. I have seen it myself. Many people have purchased it. But when my turn came , Madam refused to give me saying that item is for Living out personnel only, not for me." Kumar explained.
Manager Sahab got confused . So he got up from his seat and asked Kumar to show him the bread which Madam was not giving to him.
Kumar took him to the counter and put his fingers over a particular item ,
" Sir, this is the same bread, Madam is not giving to me." Kumar pointed out.
"You idiot, this is not bread. This is Sanitary Napkin used by ladies . " Manager Sahab cold not stop laughing at Kumar.
Since then, Kumar never insisted for soft breads.
