Pin drop silence in front of 4(T) Sqn as WO VB Singh, a very strict , no- nonsense approach instructor and course supervisor of ATT-25, Eng fit is about to de-brief his trainees .
Now , only loud and clear voice of WO Sahab is heard. Then comes the Flt Lt Kaushal , Flt Cdr of 4(T) Sqn and immediate boss of WO VB Singh in to the scene. He calls , "Mr. V B Singh !" No response from WO VB Singh. He calls again a little louder, " Mr. V B Singh!!" This time WO Sahab turns back , salutes him and says, " Sir, I will come to you. Let me finish my briefing first."
Flt Lt Kaushal waits for him patiently for a few minutes. WO VB Singh finishes his briefing quickly, orders entry senior man to march off the flight and then reports to Flt Lt Kaushal .
Note-1 WO VB Singh retired as Hon Flt Lt from IAF.

JWO Gobardhan Chakraborty AF Fit, WO ic desk ,a straight forward and welfare minded supervisor is busy with closing F(T) 700 after FFS.

" Chakraborty !! Are the Aircraft ready?"
No response from JWO Sahab.
Flt Cdr raises his voice and asks again ,
" Chakraborty!!! F(T) 700 are closed or not??"
Still no response from JWO Sahab.
Flt Cdr got angry by now, he comes towards JWO Chakraborty briskly and shouts , " What is problem with you JWO Sahab???Why are you not responding??? I have asked you about readiness of Aircraft not once but twice."
"Sir, all the F(T) 700 are closed and Aircraft are ready." JWO Chakraborty responds politely.
"But , why you did not answer when I asked earlier ????" Flt Cdr is still not satisfied
"Sir, You were addressing to some 'Chakraborty' earlier. That,s why I did not bother to answer." JWO Sahab quips.
"Who else is 'Chakraborty' here except you ????????" Flt Cdr roared.
"Sir, I am 'JWO Chakraborty' not any 'Chakraborty' ." JWO sahab said politely but firmly.
Note-2 JWO Gobardhan Chakraborty opted for premature retirement despite being his name in WO promotion panel. Currently he is serving in a reputed Civil Organization.

प्रसाद सर, बड़ी बात कही है आपने। साधुवाद
DeleteMy self respect is my honour. My efficiency is my achievement. My family is my proud. When I find am being humiliated or deprived of these then I would like search for alternate where I can keep my head high.
ReplyDeleteI want to write your story as well. Please call me. 8920040660

DeleteThanks my dear brother VK for highlighting the issue. I served my country with self respect and integrity. For me the welfare of my colleagues was priority like any other soldier. What I got in my life is due to the love and blessings of my colleagues in Air Force.
ReplyDeleteSir,I am honoured and feel blessed to have served with you.
DeleteVery rightly said गोवर्धन सर, as we grow older, we become more responsible and during these periods when respect is not given, certainly our men decides to opt other option. I am also victim of one officer and I took premature retirement immediately as being into Air Hq itself, took leave and went to AFRO and requested to clear me and within 25-30 days I quite this IAF.
DeleteI just remember one incident too. We were at one Radar unit, responsible for operation and maintenance. Our CTO was very senior Wg Cdr. Wo I/c was JWO GS Prasad, who was to go out after a year after completing 15+6 year of service.
ReplyDeleteOne fine day one Fg Officer who was O I/c Radar, after briefing / bulshit from CTO office came to Radar in very upset mood. He called everyone and after some talks uttered "Yadi CTO meri pant utarega, to main sabki pant utar doonga"
JWO Prasad immediately objected, saying " Sir yahan sabne itni dheeli pant nahin pahan rakhi hai" Please do not use these words. He dispersed us and told that F/O to come to Offr I/c cabin and spoke privately.
Later he told us that he told him about difference being a Wg Cdr and Fg Offr. CTO may bulshit and go away but a ROG may come if HE behave in that way.
Subsequently that Fg Offer remained cautious while speaking to us.
Morale is one should have the guts to say wrong to a "Wrong".
Absolutely right. I remember once at one of fighter sqn in WAC, op Trishul in progress. Umpire came in jeep and braked in front of DSS. WO ic WO Chraborty was there. He asked 700 from WO sahab. I was a gd on PAD standing an ears distance. WO sahab could have extended his hand to umpire. But he announced on PA system for a NC E. Umpire though did try to utter something but he was made to wait for good 5 to 7 minute. WO superannuated with HFO n HFltLt I think.

DeleteWarrant rank like these are hard to be found now. New Promotion policy has made them toothless.
DeleteNice write-up.
ReplyDeleteWhen you know your job well and you are smart, even officers will think twice before talking to you.
In my carrier, many times I have said to many officers these words "You are not talking to any Sergeant, You are talking to Sgt Muruganantham. Mind it " Even though I was given usted position when it was introduced, as I have opted to quit, I was not promotes to JWO. And I quit service as Sgt.
Thanks Sir. People like you leaving the service is great loss to the IAF.
DeleteSwabhiman or self respect is topmost priority for everyone. When it gets hurt by superiors ego without any serious nature of fault, a person can not survive in that negative environment.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
DeleteSelf respect is more important than money and privileges. Service is paramount and subordinates were more important to me. I left service in year 2012 after 29 Years of dedicated and sincere service as WO. In one of the incidents one Sqn Ldr shouted on me in front of all in our hangar which was not very wel received by me and reciprocately I shouted back telling I can shout more loudly than him. This unpleasant scene devastated me and decided to quit the service for a dignified life. After leaving I have been working in a oil PSU in my native state. Still I owe IAF for everything I have today. But airforce must retrospect, why people with vast experiences leaving the service. There is something wrong which must must be addressed at the earliest for retaining the talents.
ReplyDeleteOnly superficial measures are taken which are no more than an eye wash
DeleteThis is irony that IAF never thought of a positive retention by improving the quality of life of its men. Now when we find lots in the top are siblings of men but have forgotten to address the core issues, may be services desires to squeeze a compromised men. Those who go out are actually not required.
DeleteAt present every SNCO MESS fund is more then crore and that money is not auditable being utilize by c adm o and stn cmdr of unit being in service no body can say anything.

ReplyDeleteExactly right
DeleteThere are many times during my service period from 1984 - 2004 I had warm discussions with seniors. But during my last golden posting period from 2000-2004 I took admission in M.Tech. My latest STO did not digest this and looked for many opportunities to let me down privately or publicly. Privately and Publicly I also keep cross question him. Result was my Junior became JWO and I left as Sgt. He gave me 4 & 3 for two years instead of 5 I used to get. One day he asked me to one aircraft and I refused during night flying and asked him to sign the aircraft citing that he is superior officer of mine. Desk i/c called Flt Cdr and narrated our warm discussion we were going through. He swiftly came to DSS and straight Way asked me about aircraft problem and further course of action. He was very much satisfied and took STO with him to his office.
ReplyDeleteMy point is that if you are right at your point than someone will be there to support. I left service as per plan and today I am working as GM- Plants in Delhi-NCR. I have pride in all my decisions taken during service and thereafter.
I strongly believe that organisational culture must have the ability to withstand with the changes. Culture is groomed by the policies and the vision of the toarch bearers. If the seeds are strong so will the crop be. Many research institutions spend exorbitant amount in research and development of seeds. Air Force had always picked a fine seed from the society, there after it's culture groom's him and the entire lot becomes one of the finest collection you ever see in any organisation. AF is more an institution then organization. But the worst happened in the last one or two decades as we are trying to copy our counterparts. It is an irony when a topper has been forced or conditioned to be a moderator. Our policy makers are making all out efforts to ensure that skills are not honned. Unfortunately they are trying to follow Army and Navy culture. In the recent condition Air warriors are directioned to perform below their skills and is being shackled with unwanted burden of USTAD. Instead of creating hurdles for a career growth, now this organisation must plan to give the best within, this will encourage retention otherwise Airmen will be a ' GIRMETIA' (गिरमिटिया) of twenty second century.
ReplyDeleteAmmend to read twenty first century.
ReplyDeleteGovt should do something to reverse this trend
ReplyDeleteI also faced similar situation in 2019 in which entire station is punished bcoz when Stn Cdr arrived, they were murmuring. Problem was no word of command given before arrival of cdr.
ReplyDeleteSolution was 26 yr service sergeant was doing duck walk, jumping, running like touch n go. That day and present day nothing has changed. This made me feel quite disappointed the way offrs are treating us.
